Be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting houses....

Hmmm.... you wouldn't think that house buying would be so frustrating, but the RE that I've been working with keeps sending me listings for houses that aren't what I'm looking for.

How hard is it to understand:

  • built pre-1940 (the older the better)
  • 2500+ SF
  • multi-level
  • fixer-upper preferred (anything short of condemned will be considered)

All told, I think that there are maybe 2 to 3 dozen houses/buildings in the city that I like a lot and would seriously like to live in (based on location and actual house). They're all in the older/central part of town and I've given the RE several examples. Yet he still throws out things like ranch style homes that have "just been restored" and 1000SF cottages on the fringes of "central" EP.

Grrr... arg...

I'm just really wanting a house of my own that I don't have to consider moving out of anytime soon. My current place is nice and quite adequate, but it was intended to be temporary (no more than 4-5 years). I could stay as long as I like, but I've been there about 3 years and right now it looks like within the year, we'll have wrapped up most of the construction around it so I will have lost my yard. Currently I'm using 2 lots worth of space (1 for the house and 1 for Zhaan's yard). I'd intended to build a carport/garage so that I could more easily work on the cars, but once construction geared up, I didn't have as much time, and I saw that it would be pointless to really build it since it would come down fairly soon. On the one hand it's cool to know that I had more or less figured out the timetable to the projects well enough to know I'd want to move on RSN, on the other, it's annoying that I'm not finding the next place.

I think I'm at that point where I want a lair that I can come home to whenever I need to. A place that will be mine for a long time. Even if I do get to move around a bit and spend good chunks of time in other cities, I need to know that I can come back to a place that is mine and where I can hide out from the world. This is very much a Batcave/Fortess of Solitude thing (just not quite as cool and without the tights ;).

Sounds like you need a new real estate agent...
Yeah, I think I might, but he's the brother of one of Ruben's friends and our mortgage person recommended him. What I need to do is find a local RE who I like and who doesn't (apparently) ignore my fairly specific (in a vague sort of way) requests.

Failing that, I could also just drive around the target neighborhoods until I see a for sale sign in front of a suitable house and then ask him to look it up for me.
