New movie category...

Well, Portia just left a little while ago and I'm left feeling rather cool. We just hung out, talked at great length about Buffy and Angel and random stuff and watched Coyote Ugly. I'm left wondering....

There should be a category for movies like Coyote Ugly, The Bodyguard, Save the Last Dance, The One, etc... You know the type, the movies that are highly polished, with good soundtracks but not a lot of depth or originality. Movies that have a handful of really funny lines or scenes but would drive you insane after a few viewings.... Actually, Portia came up with a good label. She was listening to Tyra Banks talk and she described her as "Nice to look at but not a lot there." I think that should be an actual genre, apart from drama or comedy etc... at the very least it should be a recognized move term of some sort.

I mean, think about it, there are tons of movies out there that are just flat out guilty pleasures. You know they are tacky, shallow, and somewhat lacking in story and/or acting etc.., but you still like watching them. This is separate from cheesy or campy because these movies often tend to appeal to the broadest cross-section of the movie watching audience. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is campy, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is campy, The Evil Dead movies are campy and cheesy... Camp and cheese are good (just not in excessively large quantities). Come to think of it NTLABNALT is not flat out evil, it just honestly tells you what to expect. If I tell you that a movie like Save the Last Dance is a NTLABNALT drama, you know what to expect when you walk in. Pretty people doing somewhat interesting things with a plot that was reviewed for general spelling and grammatical errors but not much else.

These are movies that have predictable endings and probably shouldn't win an Oscar, but on a good weekend they'll probably be #1. I'm sure some people will be horrified that someone would recommend a movie with a NTLABNALT tag, but let's be honest, from time to time we all enjoy sitting down and watching a movie with good camera work, pretty lead actors, good music, and not too much else. NTLABNALT just makes it easier to know that a movie you are about to watch is fluff and should be treated as such. If you think about it all movies are fluff to some extent (yes, even movies like Schindler's List and The Piano are fluff compared to making a living and providing for your family etc...).

Just a mini-movie rant....

not a bad idea... then you know if you could watch the movie while also doing something else, and probably still be able to follow the plot :)
