Explain this to me

How does it make sense to get upset over someone's (e.g. the pope's) remarks about your religion when the standard response from the most vocal elements of that religion invariably live up to the "offensive" comment?

It seems like anytime anyone says anything negative about Islam or Mohamed the standard response worldwide is to start off with riots/protests, move on to firebombings, and finally finish up with "extremist" organizations releasing statements like "We will break up the cross, spill the liquor and impose head tax, then the only thing acceptable is a conversion (to Islam) or (killed by) the sword."

I really wish I could understand this logic. If someone accused me of being something I don't consider myself to be, my response wouldn't include the very thing that they're accusing me of doing/being.

Even though I am still ostensibly Catholic, I have some major problems with the church and the pope (but that's the subject of a different post) so I'm not defending what he said, I think it was pretty stupid on general principles and especially given the standard Vocal Wordlwide Islamic Response (tm), but it really bugs me to that this comes up so often lately (e.g. the Mohamed cartoons from last year) and invariably the response seems to be "How dare you say that we/Islam/Mohamed are/is/was violent! We'll KILL/DESTROY you for saying that!" Mind you I'm not saying the all Islamic people do that, but I don't hear enough Islamic people/groups speaking up loudly and saying "Islam is not a violent faith and we are upset that ____ has said otherwise, those who advocate violence in the name of Islam are bad/evil/sinners/whatever and we don't support them" I hear plenty of the first part of that, but not much of the distancing themselves from the violent Islamic people (it reminds me of the Eddie Izzard Executive Transvestite skit ;)

  • Meet Dargo....

Pixel and I missed having a little black cat around so I went to the pound Saturday afternoon and I found this little guy in need of a new home:…

  • RIP Morticia a/k/a Ninja Cat :-(

My little black cat died tonight. It was a sudden and surprising end to a great little cat. I'm doing ok, but I will definitely miss that…

  • Still alive!

Yes, it's true, I am still alive. Nothing particularly earth shattering has been going on lately, I've just been busy with work and then coming home…
