Grr...

Well, I blatantly borrowed this quote from quotes:

"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary." -- James D. Nicoll

I just found it amazingly amusing this morning... Probably because it got me thinking if that's English, then whatever the hell it is that most folks seem to speak out in these parts is the unloved bastard love child of English. Don't mind me, I've just spent the morning talking to various people and realizing that many of them think that someone is stuck up simply because they have a firm grasp of the English language.

What strikes me as funny about that though is that I'm actually fluent in English & Spanish (note that I didn't say perfect ;), but random schmucks keep assuming that a) I'm stuck-up/conceited because I'm talking "like a white person" (I kid you not, people actually say things like that) and b) since my English is better than average and I don't have an accent, there's no way I can possibly understand Spanish.
Apparently in their world either you mangle the two languages into Spanglish or you probably only know one because clearly people can't possibly know more than one language well. To quote Eddie Izzard "No, surely not, people couldn't possibly live at that speed." Ok, so not everyone has those attitudes, but enough do (especially among the folks I run across doing construction) that it gets old really quick. Why is it that people can't be ok with feeling like equals, if you make them feel insecure they have to try and knock you down a few notches "for your own good." I just don't get it.
