Whoa, dragon breath....

Hmmm... I did some cooking experimentation tonight.... I'm not sure if it was a success or a very scary failure.

So, while I was in college, I figured out that I liked making hot dogs for dinner every once in a while. Now these aren't just any old hot dogs, they're some of those cool "Cajun Hot Link" hot dogs with a little cheese, honey hot mustard and relish. Basically they're good to eat and bad for you. Perfect food for college. So anyways, I had been wanting to make some but I had everything except the mustard and from past experience I knew they'd be a bit bland without it. Unfortunately today, I hadn't thought ahead so my other dinner options were frozen and not easily defrostable... I was also too lame to go to the supermarket for mustard... so I get to wondering what I might have in the fridge to add flavor.... hmmmm....

rummage rummage rummage.... sit in front of open fridge and think (the joys of living alone) and then I have a brilliant idea. Minced Garlic!! I have jar of it sitting there... That's the ticket... So, I tried two things, boiling the hot dogs with a little salt and a good dose of garlic and using some as a garnish... Mind you, I'm the person who puts mustard on french fries, and uses about 10 packets of artificial sweetener with his iced tea (so it's safe to say that I have... odd taste).

So.. the hot dogs came out really good. They picked up a nice little extra bit of flavor from the garlic and salt but they were still in the realm of normal (i.e. I would consider making them for someone else to eat). The garlic relish wasn't such a great idea, at least not from the standpoint of oh... say... talking to anyone for the rest of the evening. The whole assembly of hot dog was very good and it tasted wonderful, BUT it has caused the worst breath I have ever had in my life.

Fire breathing dragons don't have anything on this garlicky dragon.... no siree. Have you ever had garlic breath that won't go away after brushing? That's what I had this evening. Minty fresh garlicky breath... mmmm.... Tonight I am most definately glad that I'm single. I think this meal would cause great unhappiness in a relationship. Hell, I can smell the garlic. It's actually died down a good bit lately, but I think I'm going to brush extra long before going to bed and then probably brush a few more times when I get up in the morning. I'd really rather not kill anyone with this breath.

So, on a pure happiness scale, the garlic heavy hot dogs were a big sucess but I don't think I'll be doing those again except maybe when I know that I can avoid people for an evening..... Do you want to know the really scary part? I'm thinking of making the 40 cloves chicken that they mentioned on Good Eats. I think this is were I got the idea that garlic could be used for more than just random cooking stuff... That's it, blame Alton for making me adventurous in the kitchen ;).

Isn't it supposed to be that if both people eat whatever it is that makes your breath stink, neither should be able to smell it on the other's breath? Heh. Find a good woman who likes garlic. If she doesn't, whooo boy, she better be able to stand Garlic breath! :)
Heh, I've heard that, but remember, I could smell my breath, so I shudder to think what someone else's breath would be like after those killer dogs :)

What I need to do is find a girl who's into spicy food in general, not just garlic. Otherwise there will be problems when we get chinese, indian, or mexican food :)

Re:

I like spicy stuff...but (chinese in general) makes my stomach hurt... Although, I do hear Japanese Kitchen calling my name!
Well, next time you're in town we'll have to wander out there again!
Ohmigod ohmigod ohmigod!

My husband and I LOVE Good Eats! Alton Brown is the BEST.
Alton Brown is definately the coolest chef type guy out there. I love the way he explains the science to what he's doing so that later, you can play around with things yourself because you have a good idea of what it is you're trying to accomplish.

I also like the fact that he never uses really really wacky kitchen stuff (like Emeril and others). I like how he's big on the whole "kitchen gadgets must multi-task" thing, but yet he'll tell you where you would want to put your $$$ (e.g. the digital thermometer/timer that he's got).

He's just great at making the kitchen and cooking in general much less daunting :)

I think I'm part vampire

I'm alergic to garlic. more than a very small amount makes me nauseated. uh, just in case you needed further proof that we're incompatible. or something :)

oh yeah? Well I'm part bat (just look at my eyesight ;)

We're incompatible? Really? I didn't get that memo.

I think this just means that I now have something else to file away in the mental spreadsheet of stuff that you do and do not like (just like I do for everyone I would ever care to hang out with). You know, suddenly I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to do that as an actual spreadsheet... /geek ;)

However, if I ever send you freshly baked garlic bread, you might infer that I'm annoyed at you ;-p
I've made chicken w/40 cloves of garlic on multiple occations, and it's not really as garlicky as you'd think - the garlic basically gets caramelized during the cooking (so when you're done you can take them and spread whole cloves on pieces of bread :). It's a marvelous dish, however, and I highly recommend it :)

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Ok, I'm definately making that in the near future :)

Of course I'm also thinking that when I visit I should convince you to make some :-p
