Even though the addition isn't ready I went ahead and dog-proofed (I hope) what was in there, broke out the one spare dog bed I had left (Saks is hard on dog beds... note to self go buy another one tomorrow) and cranked up the electric heater in the family room before letting the girls in for the night.

It's been getting into the 20s lately and its supposed to get even colder this week so I decided to suck it up and see how they handled sleeping indoors. Hopefully they won't make a huge mess (I fed them this morning for this very reason) but even if they trash the carpet a bit that's going away soon anyways so it's not a big deal. The really nice thing will be later this week when the carpenters come back out here and finish up the addition and put up the insulation. Then the back of the house will stop feeling like an ice box and the dogs will be able to learn to sleep inside before I put in the wood floors back there.

They're currently confined to the "family room" area since Zhaan really can't handle stairs anymore and Saks has never been properly house trained, but she's probably more realiable than Zhaan nowadays (Zhaan will not go outside if it's rainy, wet, etc... so that's a pain). Plus I really do like the wood floors in the rest of the house ;-).

.... Pause ....

Well, they've been in there for about 20 minutes so far and I haven't heard a peep so I'm going to risk it and go upstairs to bed. Wish us luck!

An experiment...

I'm about to try something which may or may not work out well, but which should make a couple of members of my household happy.

Ready to not be sick...

Bleh, I got to spend my last long weekend mostly sick. I did go out and do my last 2 student interviews this afternoon but I finished those up and headed straight back home so I could veg and nap some more. I should be ok enough for work tomorrow, but really, why do I always get sick on weekends (especially long weekends)? I haven't used a sick day since the early part of last year and in some ways it sucks.

Eh, oh well. At least I did get to stay inside and away from the bitterly cold wind for the most part so that was good and I should have nice warm clean clothes for work by morning so that'll make trudging out less painful.

However I think it is now time to climb into bed and enjoy soft clean warm sheets against a cold winter night. The cats approve.

Happy New Year :-)

Well, it's officially 2010 and I just wanted to say Happy New Year to everyone. I had a low key night at home last night but that's ok since I'm fighting a slight cold. It was nice to just hang out and not have to go anywhere.

Today I went out to Norfolk so I could get my iPhone replaced (it had an unfortunate run in with a floor or two and perhaps some walls). Aside from that though I spent the day being a slug and not doing much of anything and it was great. I really don't want to get knocked out by being sick and I've been really close to coming down with something since Christmas.

Hopefully a weekend of chilling at home will help me get better and avoid really getting sick.

So far the weather and I have managed to miss each other (it looks a little dicey there on Wednesday) and I'm having a great Christmas. I hope everyone else is having good time this holiday season and spending time with the people they love and care about.

One of these days....

I'll be getting ready for a trip and not cleaning and packing the night before I leave.

Plus as an added bonus I get to go in to the office tomorrow for the weekly staff meeting and to listen in on a dispute between a couple of our sub-contractors' employees. They're Spanish speakers so I'm there to make sure we have an accurate record of what happened in case anyone should need to be terminated.

I also need to stop by the store and pick up food for the critters and $$ for the pet sitter so I can leave all that ready for her before I leave.

Then (hopefully) I get to hop on a plane and head north (assuming the weather cooperates, keeping fingers crossed).

I'm really looking forward to napping on the plane :-)

Finding myself... well my stuff at least.

Well today was interesting. I'm cleaning up prior to my trip up north and what did I find?

The outside sensor for my digital thermometer/atomic clock and my old brass rat. What do these two things have in common? I've already bought replacements for both. Grumble grumble grumble.

It looks like I'm finally going to start doing interviews for prospective MIT students. I'd volunteered to do it years ago, back in El Paso, but I never heard back about it until (of course) this past spring when I was out here. On a lark I went ahead and checked with the EC office anyways and it turns out they could definitely use someone else to do interviews out here so voila.

I'm mildly worried since it's been a long time since I was interviewed for MIT and I haven't been the interviewer for too many things since then, but I'm also pretty excited about the whole process so I'm looking forward to it.

Of course it is a bit odd to realize that all the kids I'm interviewing were born in the 90s.

iron man down but not out

... it's been just about 2 months since I made an actual personal post. That won't do.

I'm doing ok though. Not everything has worked out as I had hoped, but on the whole I think that life is going in a good direction and I'm making an effort to get back into working on things that I enjoy. I let work and other things kind of drag me a down a bit but it's time to get off my ass and get stuff done. It helps that work is going along pretty well and I'm really looking forward to stuff that I have lined up (which I'll post about later) so now I just need to build up some momentum and have some fun being my usual strange geeky self :-)

So yeah, I'm still here and I am once again resolving to get back into the swing of posting. Let's see how long I can do it for this time around :-)
